Is it possible for humans to ever travel at (or near) the speed of light? If not, what is the fastest we can possibly go?

Anonymous

If you travel at 99.5% of the speed of light, departing on 25 December 2015 for 5 years in a circular route and return to Earth, you will only have aged 5 years, but everyone else on Earth will have aged 50 years and the date will be 25 December 2065. You have therefore traveled into the future. If you traveled in a straight line, you will have reached a point 50 light years away from earth. For the crew on the space ship, they would have experienced travel at 10 times the speed of light. So according to them, they traveled faster than light.

You cannot reach the speed of light since you have mass, as explained hundreds of times on Quora in different posts.

Unless we develop technology like the Alcubierre drive, we will always have relativistic time dilation effects and large discrepancies between the time experienced by our space ship crews and the rest of humanity remaining on Earth.

Look at it this way: When you travel in space, the faster you go, the more energy you have to exert on your space ship to increase your speed. Approaching the speed of light, your relativistic mass (or momentum) increases quadratically. For you as an observer on your space ship, you are stationary and the rest of the universe is flying past you at close to the speed of light. To accelerate faster, you have to increase the speed of the entire universe, with its mass, to go faster. That is clearly impossible. That is why, for velocities to ever approach c (light speed), you will have to create a bubble around your space ship that is totally removed from the rest of the universe and that bubble will now be your entire universe. Then it becomes more feasible to consider accelerating that small portion of space by bending space around that bubble, but your space ship inside it actually remains stationary.

Therein lies the problem. To "bend space around your bubble" by contracting the space in front of and expanding space behind your private space bubble to create a wave to then race into the future, will require an incredible amount of energy. The best current models require an engine and ship manufactured from exotic matter with negative mass as well as energy equivalent to the 100% efficient conversion of 700 kg of mass directly to energy.

Those two factors alone require technologies that are possibly still centuries away from being developed, managed and controlled.

I wish it was not so. I am as passionate as you seem to be about the possibility of the human race upgrading to a true space fairing species. The technological hurdles are vast though. I will cheer with you as soon as an alternative method of traveling to the stars is found and our first interstellar space ship is launched.
